Geographical Indication
A geographical indication is a notice stating that a given product originates in a given geographical area. For instance:
The geographical indication Champagne is used to indicate that a special kind of sparkling wine originates in the Champagne region of France.
Cognac is used for brandy from the French region around the town of Cognac.
However, geographical indications are also used for products other than wines and spirits, such as tobacco from Cuba, or for cheeses such as Roquefort.
They may also be used for industrial products, as Sheffield is for steel.
Our Geographical Indications team has the distinction of accurately assessing the requirements of the association applying for a Geographical Indication, and of an individual desirous of obtaining a license for applying a Geographical Indication mark to its products. The Geographical Indication services include:
- GI Registration
- Registration of Authorised User of GI
Kindly note that GI cannot be assigned as it is a public property.
